When I was preparing for the GMAT, I hired a consultant. He came and worked with me for two hours per day for four months straight. It was hard for me because I couldn’t fit in all of my time working on the GMAT into each session I had him work on. When he was done with my session, I had a whole month to review, so I had to take time off and take care of myself for the next month.
The hard part was having someone do the work for me. This is especially true if you’re a person who doesn’t have a lot of time to dedicate to studying or if you’re self-motivated like I am. When I first started, I didn’t want to hire anyone because I felt like it would limit how much I could study and take the GMAT. I was also pretty skeptical of the money I’d spent so I set out to find a free layout online that would show me exactly what I needed to do to prepare. What I found was a bunch of free information that was also pretty shoddy. I’m still learning, so don’t judge me, but I can say that it helped me tremendously.
My next move was to a site that let me take a look at a full version of the GMAT exam layout for free. I was pretty amazed with what they had to offer. You could download my layout and print it out, right there on your computer. You could also take a look at the layout in MySpace. It wasn’t free, but I figured that since this was going to be something I would take regularly, it was worth it.
When I decided to actually hire someone to create my layout for me, I was surprised to learn that there were two types of fees that I had to pay–one on a monthly basis, and another on a semi-annual basis. So depending on how much time you have to devote to studying, that could make a big difference in your final cost. I’m in a unique position because my time is very precious, but it is also something that I want to spend as much as possible, especially now that I’m looking for an MBA.
Once I got my GMAT test layout, I started to spend a lot more time studying. This was a good thing because I was able to take a look at my entire test instead of just a couple of questions each day. This really made a difference in how well I learned and understood the material. Once I spent the time studying, it was really obvious that I couldn’t afford to stop.
I’ve been really fortunate because I have a support group–my parents. They are very supportive and willing to help me do anything so I can get my diploma. They encouraged me to take the GMAT and to focus on getting my scores up. They also set a goal for me to get an MBA and to take the GMAT test every year. That goal motivated me to make sure I did the layout in GMAT order.
If you’re in a situation where you know that you need to take a GMAT exam right away, don’t let that stop you. Find a reason to sit down and take the GMAT. Spend the extra time studying and make sure you have a layout. It’s a very effective way of reviewing and memorizing the material. And that’s exactly what it is!
